Green Collective
Empowering through Education and Sustainability

Ethan Lam
Communications
I joined this project because I believe we can make the rooftop garden a more useful and enjoyable space for everyone. I have great memories of hanging out there with my friends, and I’m excited to help transform it into a vibrant area for hands-on learning and student wellbeing. As the communications coordinator, I’m the link between our team and the teachers, helping to organise and plan activities to make this vision a reality.
Founding Members
Fiona Fan
Leader

Hi, I'm Fiona, and I’m passionate about the environment's intrinsic value and my love for nature was nurtured through sports. As the leader of this initiative, I ensure our team stays on track and expands our project to other schools. I also co-led our Green Collective CCA and spearheaded the introduction of our Green Collective project to the ESGenius Global Innocup, hosted by the Innovation Council. Through this project, I aim to inspire my peers to take action, showing them that no matter their interests, everyone can contribute to climate action.

Abbie Lo
Designer
Hi, my name is Abbie, a Year 13 student, and the designer for this project. What really drew me in to this project is the simple and powerful idea that helping the planet can and should be a beautiful experience. I believe that the conservation of our planet can be as aesthetically pleasing as much as it is benefitial towards the community and the environment. My goal as a designer is to create a safe and educational environment for students, teachers, and visitors alike to learn and love our environment.

Linda Yip
Finance Officer
As one of the co-founders of Green Collective, my work is focusing on the finance and communications aspects. I helped develop and maintain detailed budgeting spreadsheets to ensure efficiency in budget allocation and that our expenditures are within limits. I also help conduct targeted research on suitable plant species for our rooftop garden and purchase necessary materials through strategic online shopping. I took the initiative to translate some of our project materials from English to Chinese to allow these information to be shared with a wider community. Furthermore, I join general team meetings to ensure clear communication with my fellow team members on task delegation and sharing updates with each others. Besides, I helped with facilitating the interactive soil workshops for 140 YCISHK primary students, educated them on different soil types and guided them through planting their own seeds, introducing them to the principles of sustainability.

Our Initiatives

Chinese Herb Garden
Our Chinese Herb Garden is meticulously designed to support students in exploring the therapeutic potential of traditional Chinese herbs. It functions as a dynamic living classroom, fostering hands-on learning and advancing knowledge in herbal medicine. The garden also emphasizes sustainable gardening practices, reinforcing the critical connection between environmental stewardship and health.

Carbon Sequestering Mural
In partnership with the Art Club, we created a series of murals and refurbished furniture using pioneering carbon dioxide-absorbing paint. This innovative project combines art with science, enhancing the visual appeal of shared spaces while actively contributing to the reduction of atmospheric COā and promoting eco-conscious design.

Recycled Stepping Stones
We designed and installed visually captivating stepping stones crafted from recycled materials. These sustainable pathways seamlessly blend functionality and aesthetics, demonstrating how environmentally friendly practices can be integrated into everyday landscapes.

Upcycled furniture
Students repurpose plastic bags to create functional, eco-friendly furniture, demonstrating creative ways to reduce plastic waste.

Insect & Pollinator homes
We build habitats for beneficial insects and pollinators, supporting biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
Our plans

Vertical Farming Shed for Advanced Gardening
The project envisions the addition of a vertical farming shed, enabling participants, including Design and Technology (DT) enthusiasts, to engage in advanced farming practices. This innovative approach will improve gardening efficiency and inspire participants to explore cutting-edge solutions in sustainable agriculture.
Composting Machine to Minimize Food Waste
To address Hong Kong’s significant food waste issue—where 3,300 tonnes of food waste are sent to landfills daily, accounting for 30% of total municipal solid waste—the project plans to install a composting machine. This machine will convert food waste into nutrient-rich compost, reducing landfill contributions and supporting the garden’s ecosystem. By integrating this system, the project aims to demonstrate how small-scale initiatives can contribute to Hong Kong’s broader waste reduction efforts.
